Polypropylene (PP)
PP is tough, but flexible and resistant to chemicals. In addition, PP’s high melting point makes it ideal for hot-filled liquids. The most common use for PP in thermoforming is in the production of food packaging.
Characteristics:
- Clarity – mostly colored opaque or translucent
- Strength – very soft and resilient (zero cracking)
- Versatility – tough and flexible
- Barrier to moisture
- Resistance to chemicals, grease, oil, and heat
- Long heat cycle
- Some shrink issues
- Very high yield
Common Forms:
- Microwave-safe plastic
- Margarine tubs
- Medicine bottles
- Yogurt containers
